TAIEX futures are contracts based on the Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index, which reflects the total market value of companies listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange and covers most of the market's major constituents.Traders can go long or short, profiting from a rise or a fall in the index. Because TAIEX futures are leveraged, a small margin controls a much larger contract value — which also means higher risk.
In practice, TAIEX futures are widely used for investment, arbitrage and risk management. Many institutional and individual investors use them to trade the market or hedge an equity portfolio.
